📝 Preparation Tips 📝

Here are some tips to help you prepare:

Pre-op:

1. Follow Preop Instructions: Dr. Wiegand's team will provide you with specific instructions. Follow them closely for the best outcome. All of your medications will be addressed and discussed, which meds to continue and which to hold.

2. Arrive on Time: Be sure to arrive at the hospital at the designated time. Surgery times are estimates only!

3. Notify Us of Changes: If anything changes in your health or circumstances, let us know as soon as possible.

4. Pre-admission testing is required for most patients in order to make sure patients will not be cancelled the day of surgery. This may identify other conditions that require work-up prior to surgery

5. Preop urine culture – when requested, this needs to be completed a week before surgery. This allows time for appropriate treatment if needed

6. Most patients need to not eat after midnight, no matter what you are told by pre-op or when your surgery is scheduled. This will allow your surgery to be moved up in the event of a cancellation or if we are moving ahead of schedule.

7.  Unless told otherwise specifically, you will need someone to drive you home.

8. Upon arrival, check in at the front desk. You will then be directed to the preoperative area.

9.  A nurse will prepare you for surgery, which may include changing into a gown, starting an IV, and meeting with your anesthesiologist. All questions about the type of anesthesia, medications, etc should be asked at this time to the anesthesiologist. Dr. Wiegand cannot tell the anesthesiologist which meds to use. Dr. Wiegand cannot choose certain anesthesiologists.

During surgery:

1. All surgery times are estimates. Surgeries take longer or are shorter depending on many different factors.

2. At ORMC, the staff will keep you updated via text message if you provide your cell phone number

3. At the surgery center, the front desk staff can keep you updated.

4.

After surgery/post-operative:

Recovery

  • Postoperative Care: You will be monitored in the      recovery room until you are stable and ready to go home or be moved to a      hospital room.
  • Discharge Instructions: You will receive specific      instructions regarding diet, medications, activity levels, and follow-up      appointments.

Follow-Up Care

  • First Follow-Up Appointment: __________________________________________
  • What to Expect: Discuss pain management, wound      care, and any concerns you might have during recovery. This plan is always made after surgery      and is specific to the findings during surgery and what actually      happened/which surgery was performed.

  • Billing and Insurance: This is a constantly changing      issue that is very complex. Insurance companies will sometimes wait until the last minute to      request additional information or even cancel a surgery. Despite our best efforts and      anticipating these issues, there are sometimes problems. Please know that we are doing our best      to make the process run smoothly and that there are no surprise bills or      billing concerns. If you want an      estimate before surgery or need an explanation after surgery, please let      us know and we can direct you to the correct people to answer your      questions.
