Which facility is right for me?
Our office makes this determination based on your procedure, your medical history, and the criteria below. You don't need to decide — we'll tell you where you're scheduled and why.

About ORMC
Orlando Regional Medical Center is the flagship hospital of the Orlando Health system and one of Florida's busiest academic medical centers. It serves as the primary site for Dr. Wiegand's complex reconstructive cases, robotic surgery, and any procedure requiring an inpatient stay.
About the Surgery Center
The Orlando Surgery Center is an Orlando Health–affiliated ambulatory surgery center located at 3435 Pinehurst Ave — just minutes from ORMC. It is a dedicated outpatient facility focused entirely on surgical procedures, with no emergency department or general hospital traffic.
Criteria for the Surgery Center
Not every patient is appropriate for an ambulatory surgery center. Our office reviews these criteria before scheduling. If any apply to you, your surgery will be moved to Orlando Regional Medical Center — which is equally excellent and where Dr. Wiegand also operates.
Malignant Hyperthermia — If you or a first-degree family member has a history of malignant hyperthermia, an anesthesia consultation is required before scheduling at most ASCs. At some locations (SSC and WGSC), surgery must be performed at the hospital.
Elevated Potassium (K+) — If your potassium level is above 5.5 mmol/L, labs will need to be repeated before your procedure. A level of 5.5 or greater requires surgery to be performed at the hospital.
Recent Stroke or Heart Attack — If you experienced a stroke (CVA) or heart attack (MI) within the past 3 months, surgery must be at the hospital. If it occurred 3–12 months ago, cardiac clearance is required and anesthesia will determine the appropriate setting.
Moderate or Severe Aortic or Mitral Stenosis — Patients with moderate or severe valve stenosis, or an aortic valve area ≤1.5 cm², must be scheduled at the hospital for general surgical cases.
Recent Cardiac Stents — If you have had a cardiac stent placed within the last 3 months, a cardiac evaluation note is required before scheduling.
Shortness of Breath — If you are unable to lie flat for 30–45 minutes without becoming short of breath, or have shortness of breath or wheezing with minimal exertion or at rest, surgery must be performed at the hospital.
Pacemaker or AICD — If you have a pacemaker or implanted cardiac defibrillator, please let our office know the manufacturer and the date it was last checked. Please bring the most recent interrogation report to your pre-op appointment.
Difficult Intubation with Sleep Apnea — If you have a history of difficult intubation AND sleep apnea, an anesthesiologist evaluation is required prior to scheduling.
Continuous Oxygen Use — If you require continuous supplemental oxygen at home, your surgery must be performed at the hospital.
Active Infections — If you have an active or recent positive result for MRSA, H. pylori, C. difficile, or intestinal parasites, surgery must be scheduled at the hospital or postponed until the infection has cleared.
