Surgery Center Eligibility

Criteria for the Surgery Center

Not every patient is appropriate for an ambulatory surgery center. Our office reviews these criteria before scheduling. If any apply to you, your surgery will be moved to Orlando Regional Medical Center — which is equally excellent and where Dr. Wiegand also operates.

Note for patients: Please contact our office at least one week in advance if you are wheelchair-dependent or bedridden. If you have questions about any of the criteria below, or are unsure about your setting, call us at 877-876-3627.
1
Anesthesia Consult Required

Malignant Hyperthermia — If you or a first-degree family member has a history of malignant hyperthermia, an anesthesia consultation is required before scheduling at most ASCs. At some locations (SSC and WGSC), surgery must be performed at the hospital.

2
May Require Hospital

Elevated Potassium (K+) — If your potassium level is above 5.5 mmol/L, labs will need to be repeated before your procedure. A level of 5.5 or greater requires surgery to be performed at the hospital.

3
May Require Hospital

Recent Stroke or Heart Attack — If you experienced a stroke (CVA) or heart attack (MI) within the past 3 months, surgery must be at the hospital. If it occurred 3–12 months ago, cardiac clearance is required and anesthesia will determine the appropriate setting.

4
May Require Hospital

Moderate or Severe Aortic or Mitral Stenosis — Patients with moderate or severe valve stenosis, or an aortic valve area ≤1.5 cm², must be scheduled at the hospital for general surgical cases.

5
Evaluation Required

Recent Cardiac Stents — If you have had a cardiac stent placed within the last 3 months, a cardiac evaluation note is required before scheduling.

6
May Require Hospital

Shortness of Breath — If you are unable to lie flat for 30–45 minutes without becoming short of breath, or have shortness of breath or wheezing with minimal exertion or at rest, surgery must be performed at the hospital.

7
Information Needed

Pacemaker or AICD — If you have a pacemaker or implanted cardiac defibrillator, please let our office know the manufacturer and the date it was last checked. Please bring the most recent interrogation report to your pre-op appointment.

8
Anesthesia Consult Required

Difficult Intubation with Sleep Apnea — If you have a history of difficult intubation AND sleep apnea, an anesthesiologist evaluation is required prior to scheduling.

9
Requires Hospital

Continuous Oxygen Use — If you require continuous supplemental oxygen at home, your surgery must be performed at the hospital.

10
May Require Hospital

Active Infections — If you have an active or recent positive result for MRSA, H. pylori, C. difficile, or intestinal parasites, surgery must be scheduled at the hospital or postponed until the infection has cleared.

Weight & BMI Requirements

Maximum Weight
< 350 lbs
Required for ASC eligibility
BMI Limit
BMI ≤ 50
BMI above 50 requires hospital setting

Tests that may be required

Depending on your medical history, some or all of the following may be needed before your procedure can be scheduled at either facility.

Potassium (K+) Level

Required if you have kidney disease, take certain blood pressure or heart medications, or have a history of elevated potassium. Must be within normal limits prior to surgery.

EKG (Electrocardiogram)

Required within 1 year of the procedure for patients with a history of heart failure, high cholesterol, angina, heart attack, or severe cardiovascular disease.

Cardiac / Medical Evaluation

A clearance note from a cardiologist or internist within 1 year is required for patients with CABG, coronary artery disease, obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes, or peripheral arterial disease.
